                                      B
It`s that time of year again — the annual 1/2 Marathon in Nashville, Tennessee. This year, I
had the opportunity to ride in the pace truck. This is the truck that stays in front of the fastest racer,
keeping track of the average time.
“All right people, let`s go, let`s go!” People on the streets started cheering for the runners that
were following us a few yards behind. I looked out the back of the truck, watching the progress of

                                      3
the race. About 20 racers were still sticking together in one group. I knew that would change once
we got further in the race.
Riding in the pace truck was a great experience. In addition to getting to see the race from a
unique perspective (视角) , I also had the opportunity to speak with some of the coaches of the
racers. “The course is quite difficult because it has a lot of hills,” said Andrey Brarnoe, who was
the manager for two of the men and one woman in the race. “So they started running slow and are
picking up in the second half.”
After about 18 miles, the race started getting tense. The group of racers that had stayed
together for the whole race began to split up (拉开). It wouldn`t be long until a winner appeared.
That prediction came true a few miles later, when Simon Wangai pulled ahead of the rest racers.
Wangai remained the position for the rest of the race, winning first place.
After the race, I spoke with Wangai, asking him what he thought as he ran ahead of the pack.
“I decided to pull ahead of the pack because I wanted to win,” he said.
I also had the opportunity to speak with Olena Shurkhno, the winner of the women`s race.
“The first goal at my bottom heart was showing a good result.” said she, by adding “When runing
a marathon, you`re not expecting a fast time. I changed my strategy, and I decided to run to win.”
24. It can be inferred that the author is ______________.
   A. a reporter to cover the Marathon
   B. a racer taking part in the Marathon
   C. the driver of the pace truck
   D. an organizer of the Marathon
25.Simon Wangai won first place in the Marathon_____________.
   A. with the help of his manager
   B. as a dark horse
   C. as people had expected
   D. a few miles ahead of other racers
26. At the beginning of the marathon, which was Olena Shurkhno concerned about most ?
   ____________.
   A. Keeping running in the lead
   B. Helping other racers go further
   C. A satisfying result of the race
   D. The fastest time in the race
27. Which of the following statement is not TRUE according to the text?
   A. The pace truck was used to keep track of the progress of the race.
   B. About 20 racers took part in this year`s race.
   C. 1/2 Marathon is an annual event of about 20 miles.
   D. Running slow in the first half and speeding up in the second is the strategy used in the race.

                                 C
As many people around the world celebrate Mother's Day, a Chinese scholar has made it his
task to create China`s own Mother`s Day. Li Hanqiu, a member of the Chinese People's Political
Consultative Conference(CPPCC)National Committee, suggested that the second day of the
fourth lunar month, which falls on May 18 this year, be the day.It coincides with the birthday of

                                      4
4th century BC philosopher Mencius, whose mother has long been considered the perfect example
of maternal(母亲的)devotion and love.
Li has called for the traditional Western gift of carnations for the day to be changed to lilies,
which in ancient times were planted by mothers in their courtyards as a sign of sorrow at their
children leaving home.“In a country with a deeply-rooted tradition of filial piety(孝顺), we
should have our own occasion to express love for mothers according to Chinese custom,”Li said.
He has founded a non-government organization Chinese Mother's Festival Promotion Society
with the support of many other Confucian scholars. It plans to celebrate its first Chinese Mother's
Day on May 18.“This is our first year and the celebration will be held only in Zoucheng city of
Shandong Province and Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province, but we believe it will be accepted by
more Chinese people at home and abroad as it helps strengthen our traditional culture of filial
piety,” said Li.
He also plans to build a theme park on maternal culture in Zoucheng, the birthplace of
Mencius.According to Li, the society plans to send pamphlets over the next few years to a million
students in 100 Chinese cities advocating (宣传) filial piety.
28. When observing Chinese Mother`s Day, the most important gift should be_________.

29. It is suggested that we should have our own Mother`s Day because__________.
   A. we live in a country with a long history
   B. we have a deeply –rooted tradition of creating festivals
C.China has the traditional culture of filial piety
   D. mothers in China are the greatest in the world
30. In order to support Chinese Mother`s Day all of the following have been done
    EXCEPT______.
   A. founding an organization, Chinese Mother`s Festival Promotion Society
   B. planning to celebrate the first festival in Shandong and Hebei
   C. planning to build a theme park on maternal culture
   D. deciding to send pamphlets to students all over the world
31. What would be the best title for the passage?
   A. Western Mother`s Day and Chinese Mother`s Day
   B. Chinese Mother`s Festival Promotion Society Founded
   C. Scholars Call for China`s Own Mother`s Day
   D. Filial piety—Chinese Traditional Culture

                                      D
“Image is everything.” An entire industry has been built upon the assumption that image is
everything, but when it comes down to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no
substance(事实)behind the image, the product, service or person will fail eventually.
First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services.
Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection. Public
concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising

                                      5
agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer
will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen
accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal
( 丑 闻 ) showed that behind that image, it cheated in business practices. Despite the previous
positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a
business unit. Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality behind the image has led to
the downfall of the world famous accounting firm.
Similarly, personal advisers can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars.
Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and
ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the
view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians
and movie stars that fell from grace like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures
of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important,
but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.
To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether
that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. But image is
only half of the equation. What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself
—— the person or product must deliver on that image or there is little chance for long-term
success.
32. The downfall of the Arthour Andersen accounting firm is due to ___________.
   A. its previous images B. its dishonesty in business
   C. its bad management D. its poor service
33. Why did some famous people fall from grace?
   A. Their images were not well built up.
   B. They felt much pressure from the public.
   C. They failed to live up to their images.
   D. They paid little attention to fame and fortune.
34. The structure of the passage is ___________.
    ( A: Argument P: Point C: Conclusion )

35. The author tries to argue that ___________.
   A. image creates everything
   B. image is the key to success
   C. truth is unlikely ever to be equaled
   D. truth and image are equally important

作文范文

Dear Sir,

I'm writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host families for the Australian

students.

Located in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood, our large fully-equipped apartment meets all

their needs.Apart from the convenient public transportation, my mum will also drive them to

some nearby places of interest. With fluent English and an outgoing personality, I'm sure I will

have no difficulty communicating with them, for my parents are both English teachers.Above all,

we hosted 3 British students 2 months ago, through which we've gained lots of experience. In

addition, my mother's expert cooking can guarantee them a wonderful chance of tasting delicious

Chinese food.

I would greatly appreciate it if I could have the chance to host them and make friends with

them.

    Looking forward to your reply.

                                                                     Yours,

                                                                     Li Hua
